FEV Tutor Unveils Promising AI-Enhanced Tutoring Platform with Significant Learning Gains
New research shows FEV Tutor’s human-led, AI-assisted Tutor CoPilot improved student outcomes and tutor effectiveness.
WOBURN, MA - October 7, 2024 — FEV Tutor, a leading provider of high-impact online tutoring, is excited to announce groundbreaking results from a recent study conducted in collaboration with Stanford University’s National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) on FEV Tutor’s new AI-powered tool, Tutor CoPilot. This innovative system, designed to assist tutors with real-time, expert-level guidance, has demonstrated substantial improvements in student learning outcomes, particularly in mathematics education for K-12 students.
In the first-ever randomized controlled trial of AI-assisted tutoring, Tutor CoPilot improved math sessions, boosting student tutoring assessment success by an average of 9 percentage points for less-experienced tutors. Conducted with 900 tutors and 1,800 students from underserved communities, FEV Tutor’s Tutor CoPilot empowered tutors to adopt high-quality strategies like asking guiding questions and prompting student explanations—critical approaches to fostering deeper understanding and long-term learning success.
“Tutor CoPilot is revolutionizing the tutoring experience,” said Reed Overfelt, CEO at FEV Tutor. “By integrating cutting-edge AI with the human touch, we’re able to provide real-time, expert guidance that scales high-quality education, especially to those who need it most. The results speak for themselves—we’re seeing better outcomes across the board, particularly for students who traditionally face barriers in education.”
In addition to improved learning outcomes, the study highlighted the cost-effectiveness of Tutor CoPilot. At just $20 per tutor annually, in comparison to $3,000+ spent per-teacher annually for professional development, it presents a scalable and affordable solution to traditional training programs, which can cost thousands of dollars per educator. The platform’s ability to seamlessly integrate into virtual tutoring sessions and provide instant, expert-like guidance offers an efficient and practical alternative to resource-intensive professional development programs.
“This research highlights the promise of human-led, AI-assisted tutoring,” said Susanna Loeb, Faculty Director of the National Student Success Accelerator. “It’s ability to empower less experienced tutors while improving student outcomes in a cost-effective way aligns with our mission to accelerate the growth of high-impact tutoring opportunities for all K-12 students who could benefit.”
